Love Week

Since it’s the week of Valentine’s Day, I thought I'd talk about the topic of love.

It’s probably the topic most written about especially in music. Some of the most memorable books are love stories and we all love to watch a love story unravel in a TV series and Rom Coms.

One of the songs we are currently recording, “Take This Moment”, is inspired by the film trilogy Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, which we watched for the first time during the pandemic while living in Sicily. It is one of our favourite songs that we have written to date and we have great memories of writing it in our apartment overlooking the sea and on the beach sipping Aperol Spritz.

The song is very much a love story.

When I think about some of the greatest love songs the first one that comes to mind is “I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton.

Of course the first version I heard was Whitney Houston’s in the film The Bodyguard, my favourite film at the time. It was a genius idea by Kevin Costner to place that song in the film.

The song went on to be a global success, topping the charts in almost all countries. It even became the best-selling single of all time by a female solo artist and ended up winning three Grammy Awards.

I will forever associate the song with the film as a result.

The best love songs will leave you feeling something, they might remind you of a particular time, person or place. They might even make you cry. This is why song placement in film and TV is so important.

When I listen to “Nothing Compares To You” I always picture Sinéad crying in her music video.

When I listen to “Simply The Best” I remember the scene in Schitt’s Creek where Patrick serenades David.

When I hear “With or Without You” I think of the scene in Friends where Ross requests the song for Rachel to try to apologise for his indiscretion (or were they on a break?)

Unchained Melody” will always remind me of the pottery scene in “Ghost”.

When I hear “Kissing You” I always think of the fish tank scene in Romeo & Juliet.

And who can tell me they didn’t shed a tear the first time they heard “Both Sides Now” in that scene in Love Actually!?!

Note that some of the above films and series are also some of the greatest romance stories.

I would love to hear some of your own examples in the comments below !
